General Tips

Purchase a digital camera for your trip that uses AA batteries instead of a camera that uses proprietary batteries. They are less expensive to replace, easy to charge and are easily available wherever you go.
James M., Forked River, NJ

When packing slacks or skirts lay them all one on top of another and then fold them to fit into your suitcase. Much less creasing takes place.
Barbara P., Boca Raton, FL

To make more room in your luggage, roll your clothing, it makes more room and you don't have too many wrinkles. Also, you can wrap or fold your clothing in plastic, and when you get to your destination -- absolutely no wrinkles.
Velva B., Indianapolis, IN

I always roll my clothes as I pack them, it saves room and they wrinkle less. Also, pack clothes that mix and match, it helps avoid boredom from wearing the same outfits again and again.
Judy P., New York, NY

Always pack luggage with a mixture of clothing of each person traveling in each suitcase. If a bag is lost, no one is without any change of clothes. You will only have to open one suitcase at each hotel. Less to pack and unpack, less to find place for in hotel rooms with limited closet/drawer space.
Marilyn L., East Brunswick, NJ

When traveling in Asia I took old clothes including socks. Instead of doing laundry on the trip I threw the items away allowing room in my luggage to bring home gifts.
Carol G., Winterset, Iowa

Take along safety pins on your trip. Use them to foil pick pocketers by pinning them at the top of your pockets (inside). It will only take a minute to open them when you need to access the pocket.
John K., Trenton, NJ

If you are traveling in the summer, purchase at a dollar store (in advance of your departure) a miniature battery operated fan. They usually come with a cord attached to it so you can wear it around your neck. Take a miniature plaster spray bottle that you can fill with water. These items were invaluable when touring in the heat and walking outdoors. They saved me from feeling overcome by the heat.
Renee K., Owings Mills, MD

I always carry $50.00 in $1.00 bills. They go a long way with help for luggage, directions, etc.
Anne Ellen W., Alpine, NJ

As they don't allow any irons or ironing boards on cruise ships, I pack about 20 thin wire hangers (from the dry cleaners). As you unpack if anything is wrinkled just place it on one of the hangers, hang it in the bathroom with the door closed and turn the hot water on. Within a few minutes the steam makes the wrinkles disappear.
Donna B., New Rochelle, NY

Stay onboard when everyone else goes ashore; the adventure is the ship.

China View China escorted tours
Since English is not widely spoken in China always have the concierge write the hotel name in Chinese on a piece of paper and carry it with you. If you get lost, you can grab a cab and show the Chinese written hotel name to the driver.
Patricia M., Edison, NY

LADIES: When touring China be sure to pack lots of wet-naps, baby-wipes, tissues and/or travel toilet paper. Most of the toilets are not western-style. Often there is no toilet bowl or toilet seat. Toilet paper is not always available. Be prepared!
Terri D., Flushing, NY

Paris, France
Although the metro is a great way to get around Paris, buses are easy and you get a free tour of the city.
Linda L., Doylestown, PA
Iceland
Dress in layers when visiting Iceland. The temperature and weather conditions change dramatically during the day. It will be one of the most unforgettable vacations of your lifetime.
Jackie W., Dunedin, FL

Italy View Italy vacation packages

When you travel to Italy don't forget to take washcloths along. Just purchase a dozen at the dollar store (before you depart) so they can be discarded after use. Washcloths just don't seem to exist in Italy--and I really missed them!
Ruth R., Tabernacle, NJ

Sicily
Have free time on your tour? Don't be afraid to rent a car. The roads are very easy to navigate and have very little traffic. The countryside within Sicily is wonderful. Truly Discover Sicily by car!
Lucille C., Buchanan, NY

Visit Reggio Calabria as a day trip when in Taormina. In Reggio Calabria, the National Museum holds one of the most important archaeological collections in Italy: Paleolithic, Byzantine and Arab art, relics of the Bronze and Iron Ages, tomb outfits, pictorial tables and the world famous Bronzes of Riace. The town is lovely, and there is fine shopping, too.
Terri D., Flushing, NY

Montecatini, Tuscany
While in Montecatini be sure to take the Funicular up to Montecatini Alto. There are a number of restaurants in the main Piazza to enjoy a relaxing lunch. Be sure to visit the main church at the top of the hill walking up through the main Piazza.
Allan R., Spring Valley, NY

London View London vacation packages
Buy the seven-day Oyster for zones 1 and 2. You will ride the tube and the bus for unlimited rides, never have to wait in line for a ticket, and the Oyster scans when you hold it over the reader near the turnstile. You will save time and money. Zones 1 and 2 will cover just about anywhere you will probably want to go while in London.
Alice D., Bayside, NY

The Courtauld Gallery in the Strand has some of the most beautiful French Impressionism by the great masters. There is no charge for admission Between 10 AM and 2 PM on Mondays.
Alice D., Bayside, NY

My wife is handicapped. Look at the Buckingham Palace website to reserve a free wheelchair for their tour. As an added bonus, the handicapped person is admitted half price as is her caregiver.
Bill M., Jackson, NJ

At the Tower of London they offer a ceremony that very few people ever see. It is called The Changing of the Keys and it is done at 9:30 at night. You get to see the Tower illuminated as well as Tower Bridge in the distance. It offers the Tower, the Beefeaters, no crowds, the works-- a really great experience, and best of all -- IT'S FREE! You need to write in advance with your dates and number in party and they mail the passes to you -- check the Tower of London website for further information.
Lorraine V., Glen Rock, NJ

Good food at reasonable prices can be had at the major museum restaurants such as the British Museum, Tate Modern and others in London. This also saves valuable time for enjoying the museum and sight-seeing.
Robert W., Holland, PA

Prague
Day of arrival in Prague (on the Prague and Budapest trip), make sure that you are wearing comfortable walking shoes. On our trip, the walking tour is done on the first day.
Anne B., Schenectady, NY

Egypt

When in Egypt on any tour, always have at least 50 (US) dollars in singles for tips. Tips are a major part of the tourism industry. Tips are expected everywhere and your guide can assist. Bathrooms everywhere have attendants for tips. Take a roll of toilet paper , wipes and hand sanitizer per person everywhere. Save yourself the trouble, toilet paper comes at a cost!
